CQ Vital Statistics on American Politics

Gelman Library now subscribes to CQ Vital Statistics on American Politics, a new resource for statistical research in many areas of American politics, including elections, Congress, the presidency, the judiciary, the media, campaign finances, foreign, social, and economic policy; and a variety of issues related to state and local government. Coverage ranges from “hard” data such as votes cast and offices won to rankings of public officials' reputations, content analyses of media coverage, and public opinion data about policy issues.

This resource includes an historical perspective; depending on the available data, the longest possible time periods are covered, even with public opinion data. The sources of material include: reference volumes, government publications, political science journals, monographs, the Internet, and press releases, among others.

Alexander Street Press music databases

Gelman recently began a subscription to several streaming music databases through Alexander Street Press. These databases are:

• African American Music- African American Music contains over 50,000 tracks of music, covering jazz, blues, gospel, and other forms of African American musical expression. The collection includes music from major labels, such as Document Records, Rounder Records, and Delmark Records.
• American Song- American Song encompasses the great American musical genres including country, folk, bluegrass, Western, old time, American Indian, blues, gospel, and shape note singing. The music comes from Rounder Records, the Smithsonian Institution, Document Records, and other labels and sources.
• Classical Music Library- Selections range from the earliest Gregorian chants to works by modern composers—including symphonic music, vocal and instrumental music, choral works, and other forms.
• Contemporary World Music- Contemporary World Music allows searching and browsing of over 50,000 tracks by instrument, country, region, artist, genre, recording label, and other categories. Search, click, and listen to 50,000 tracks of reggae, worldbeat, neo-traditional, world fusion, Balkanic jazz, African film, Bollywood, Arab swing and jazz, and other genres. There is also traditional music—Indian classical, fado, flamenco, klezmer, zydeco, gospel, gagaku, and more.
  
• Smithsonian Global Sound- Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries is a virtual encyclopedia of the world's musical and aural traditions, comprised of over 35,000 tracks of music, spoken word, and natural and human-made sounds. Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries includes the published recordings owned by the non-profit Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label and the archival audio collections of the legendary Folkways Records, Cook, Dyer-Bennet, Fast Folk, Monitor, Paredon and other labels.

ARTstor

Gelman Library now subscribes to ARTstor, a searchable database of more than 750,000 images applicable to different times, cultures, and disciplines. Users can view and analyze images through features such as zooming and panning.

In addition to locating the images by searching directly in ARTstor, users can also find images associated with JSTOR images by clicking on the "Images in ARTstor" tab.

19th Century US Newspapers

Gelman Library has recently purchased 19th Century U.S. Newspapers, a resource that provides access to approximately 1.7 million pages of primary source newspaper content from the 19th century, including full-text and images. The collection encompasses the entire 19th century, with an emphasis on such topics as the American Civil War, African-American culture and history, Western migration and Antebellum-era life among other subjects.

Garland Encyclopedia of World Music

The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music has more than 9,000 pages of material, combined with entries by more than 700 expert contributors from all over the world.

Comprised of scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports, GreenFILE offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the ecology. Greenfile provides abstracts and indexing to over 600 journal titles, drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology. Some full text is included.

Oxford Reference Online Premium

The Premium Collection includes over 175 titles, updated regularly, in the Oxford Companions and Oxford Dictionaries series. The collection covers a wide variety of subjects from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

DAAI: Design and Applied Arts Index

Covers articles, news items, and reviews published in design and applied arts periodicals. Disciplines surveyed include graphic design, fashion and clothing, furniture, interior design, architecture, web design, computer-aided design, garden design, and more.

Papers of George Washington Digital Edition

The Papers of George Washington Digital Edition (PGWDE) contains the entire text of the fifty-two volumes of the print edition published by the University of Virginia Press through 2005, in six series: Diaries, Revolutionary War, Colonial, Confederation, Presidential, and Retirement.

International Security & Counter-Terrorism Reference Center

Content includes hundreds of full-text journals and periodicals, hundreds of thousands of selected articles, newsfeeds, reports, summaries, books, blogs, FAQs, and proprietary Background Information Summaries that pertain to terrorism and security. ISCTRC also combines deep background from scholarly writings with expert commentary from a variety of organizations, agencies, and publishers and timely reviews of recent developments across the international political, military, economic, social, and technical spectrum.

Additional subjects covered in the database include Drug Research, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacy, Drug Side Effects and Interactions, Toxicology, Human Medicine (Clinical and Experimental), Basic Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Biomedical, Medical Devices, Engineering and Instrumentation, Health Policy and Management, Pharmacoeconomics, Public and Occupational Health, Environmental Health, Pollution Control, Substance Dependence and Abuse, Psychiatry, Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Nursing.

Coverage is from 1966 to the present, with some older materials also included.
